America’s Tall Ship Deployment Opportunities

GENERAL  
1.  Two or more Sea Cadets will get to sail aboard “America’s Tall Ship”, the US Coast Guard Cutter EAGLE.   Overall period will be confirmed in the coming months. This deployment is usually three to five week duration and held during the July to August timeframe.
DEPLOYMENT DETAILS
2.  The USCG Cutter EAGLE deployment is a demanding and unique opportunity normally available annually to two Sea cadets. For this reason, only very deserving cadets deemed capable of successfully completing the training are to be submitted for selection. It’s therefore important that:
a. cadets considering applying have a good understanding of the training’s schedule and, conditions and selection requirements; and
b. chain of command (Corps COs, ACOs, RCSU SOs and RMLOs) comments be based on that same information.
3.  Deployment conditions, medical support and selection prerequisites provided below should be used to gain a better understanding of the training and to assess an individual’s capability, suitability and eligibility.
a. Deployment Conditions. The USCG Cutter EAGLE deployment takes place aboard a sailing ship approximately 98 metres (295 feet) in length. The ship, under the command of a qualified US Coast Guard Captain, sails off the East coast of the United States for a period of six to seven weeks and continuously at sea for up to five days. During this deployment, cadets are involved in every part of shipboard operations (helm, lookout, husbandry, cookery, seamanship, safety, etc.) and sailing evolutions (hoisting, lowering, furling and unfurling sails, on deck and aloft in the rigging, etc.) in a 24/7 watch system.
b. Medical Support. A Coast Guard Health Services Technician is aboard while EAGLE is underway.  The medical team can provide only basic first aid, simple urgent care needs (seasickness, minor lacerations, colds, etc.) and initial stabilization of emergencies in preparation for transport.  There is no lab or x-ray available.  There is no medication on board for treatment of chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, or heart failure.  In case of a medical emergency, there is no easy or quick way to evacuate patients to a medical facility.Evacuation to a medical facility may take from 10 to 24 hours.
ADMINSTRATIVE AND TRAINING PREREQUISITES
4.  IOT be eligible to participate in this deployment, a cadet must meet or exceed the following prerequisites:
a.have attained the age of 16 years as of the first day of Januaryand not be 18 years before 1 April of the year of the deployment;
b. have successfully completed Phase IV from the corps program;  
c. hold the rank of PO1;
d. have completed any TG3 or 6-8 week specialty course;
e. be fluent in English, which signifies an excellent understanding of the language with an ability to comprehend and express one’s self in it;
f.overall incentive level bronze for the candidate’s age group successfully completed by the application deadline. (see CATO 14-18);
g. be mature enough to perform his/her duties with no direction from his/her supervisor; and
h. be highly recommended for this deployment by all levels in the chain of command.
5. Waivers. Waivers will not be granted.  
MEDICAL AND PHYSICAL PREREQUISITES
6.  IOT be eligible to participate in this deployment, a cadet must be free of any ailment, condition (physical or psychological) or injury:
a. which requires or may require that he/she, even in rare or unusual circumstances, be taken to a medical facility or treated by medical personnel;
b. which requires or may require that he/she take medication or inhalers of any kind;  
c. which will or may prevent him/her from completing the training and performing assigned duties;
d. which will or may prevent him/her from living and/or working in conditions associated with life aboard a tall ship at sea for extended periods of time;
e. which will or may prevent him/her from going aloft, hulling on heavy sheets, and carrying heavy gear on a regular basis;
f. which will or may prevent him/her from going into confined areas (galley, bunk and passageway) and fitting through tight openings (hatches, ladders and doors); and
g. which will or may prevent him/her from comprehending orders and directions, sometimes in an emergency situation, and quickly reacting to them.
Note: In order for RMLOs to issue judicious recommendations on cadet applications, RCSU Sea Cadets SOs are requested to provide them with above conditions & prereqs.
7. Waivers. Waivers will not be granted.
APPLICATIONS AND SELECTIONS
8.  Regions are invited to submit up to 2 cadets (1 M and 1F) applications listed in priorityNLT 1 March 2012through FORTRESS, supplemented with the fol info/docs :
a. course reports/PERs for the 3 previous summer courses and staff cadet positions;
b. copy of birth certificate or certificate of Canadian citizenship or passport (if already in hand);  
c. overall incentive level bronze for the candidate’s age group successfully completed by the application deadline. (see CATO 14-18);
d. two color pictures (passport or photomat/photo booth size);  
e. any other supporting document and/or recommendations; and
f. cadet’s personal email address.
Note: Incomplete applications (e.g. without course reports or PERs) will not be considered.  
9.  Selection will be announced as soon as deployment details are confirmed (Expected 20 July to 15 Aug).  (Expected timeframe for announcing is anywhere from 1 April to 30 May 2012.)

Sea Cadet – Canadian Coast Guard Deployments

GENERAL
1.  It’s expected that Sea Cadets will again be offered billets to sail aboard Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) Ships during summer 2012. Such deployments are usually 3 or 6 weeks in duration and are usually held between late June and August. In anticipation of these billets, we’re inviting Sea Cadets and CIC (Sea) Officers to submit their applications.
DEPLOYMENT DETAILS
2.  The CCG ship deployment is a demanding and unique opportunity and is only available to a handful of Sea Cadets and CIC (Sea) officers.  For this reason, only very deserving cadets and officers’ deemed capable of successfully completing the training will be considered for selection. It’s therefore important that:
a. cadets and officers’ considering applying have a good understanding of the training’s schedule and conditions and eligibility requirements (para 3);
b. chain of command (Corps COs, ACOs, RCSU SOs and RMLOs) comments be based on that same information.
3.  Deployment conditions, medical support and selection prerequisites provided below should be used to gain a better understanding of the training and to assess an individual’s capability, suitability and eligibility.
a. Deployment Conditions. The CCG training takes place generally aboard a CCG icebreaker. The ship, under the command of a qualified CCG Captain, sails off the Canadian East coast up to the North Arctic Seas for a period of 3 or 6 weeks and continuously at sea for up to 5 days. During this training, cadets and officers’ are expected to be involved in every part of shipboard operations (operations room watches, upper deck operations, husbandry, cookery, engineering, damage control, safety, etc.) in a 24/7 watch system.
b.Medical Support. A CCG First Aid Attendant is aboard while the CCG Ships are underway.  The medical team can provide only basic first aid, simple urgent care needs (seasickness, minor lacerations, colds, etc.) and initial stabilization of emergencies in preparation for transport.  There is no lab or x-ray available.  There is no medication on board for treatment of chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, or heart failure.  In case of a medical emergency, and considering that substantial distances are commonly involved in obtaining assistance, there is no easy or quick way to evacuate patients to a medical facility. Evacuation to a medical facility may take from 10 to 24 hours.
CADETS ADMINISTRATIVE AND TRAINING PREREQUISITES
4.  IOT be eligible to participate in this deployment, a cadet must meet or exceed the following prerequisites:
a. have attained the age of 16 years as of the first day of Januaryand not be 18 years before 1 April of the year of the deployment;
b. have successfully completed Phase IV from the Corps program;
c. holds the minimum rank of PO2;
d. have successfully completed any TG2/intermediate, TG3 or 6-8 week specialty course;
e. be fluent in English or French (depending on the operational language of the CCG Ship(s)), which signifies an excellent understanding of the language and an ability to express one’s self in it;
f. overall incentive level bronze for the candidate’s age group successfully completed by the application deadline. (see CATO 14-18);
g. be mature, and considered to be a credit to the Sea Cadet Organization; and
h. be highly recommended for this training by all levels in the chain of command.
5. Waivers. Waivers will not be granted.
OFFICER ADMINISTRATIVE AND TRAINING PREREQUISITES
6.  IOT be eligible to participate in this deployment, an officer must meet or exceed the following prerequisites:
a. MOSID : 02320-01 (CIC Sea Only);
b. holds the minimum rank of SLt;
c. have, in hand, a valid Canadian Forces Identification Card (NDI 20) or Temporary Canadian Forces Identification Card (NDI 10) and does not expire within 3 months from return date;
d. have four (4) years experience as a CIC (Sea) officer;  
e. be fluent in English or French (depending on the operational speaking language of the CCG Ship(s)), which signifies an excellent understanding of the language and an ability to express one’s self in it; and
f. be highly recommended for this exercise by all levels in the chain of command.
7.  Preference may be given to officers with previous CSTC experience and currently serving with a RCSCC.  
8. Waivers. Waivers will not be granted.
MEDICAL AND PHYSICAL PREREQUISITES – CADETS AND ESCORT OFFICERS
9.  IOT be eligible to participate in this deployment, cadets and officers must be free of any ailment, condition (physical or psychological) or injury:
a. which requires or may require that they, even in rare or unusual circumstances, be taken to a medical facility or treated by medical personnel;
b. which requires or may require that they take medication or inhalers of any kind;  
c. which will or may prevent them from completing this training and performing assigned duties;
d. which will or may prevent them from living and/or working in conditions associated with life aboard a ship at sea for extended periods of time;
e. which will or may prevent them from carrying heavy gear on a regular basis;
f. which will or may prevent them from going into confined areas (galley, bunks and passageways) and fitting through tight openings (hatches, ladders and doors); and
g. which will or may prevent him/her from comprehending orders and directions, sometimes in an emergency situation, and quickly reacting to them.
10.  Officers must meet the medical standard for MARS officer (V3, CV2, H2, G2, O2, S5).
11.  In order for RMLOs to issue judicious recommendations on cadet applications, RCSU Sea Cadets SOs are requested to provide them with above conditions & prereqs.
12. Waivers. Waivers will not be granted.
APPLICATIONS AND SELECTIONS – CADETS AND OFFICERS
13.  Regions are invited to submit cadet and officer applications (no limit in number) (M and/or F)NLT 1 March 2012listed in priority as fol:
a. cadet applications through FORTRESS, supplemented with the fol info/docs :
(1) course reports/PERs for the 3 previous summer courses and staff cadet positions,
(2) overall incentive level bronze for the candidate’s age group successfully completed by the application deadline. (see CATO 14-18),
(3) copy of birth certificate or certificate of Canadian citizenship or passport (if already in hand),  
(4) two color pictures (passport or photomat/photo booth size),
(5) period of availability (e.g., 20 June to 31 August 2012), and
(6) duration of availability (i.e., 4 weeks, 7 weeks or no limit);
  • b. escort officer applications using the Escort Officer Application for Employment form (attached), as well as:
  • (1) PERs for the 3 previous CSTC/RCSU/RCIS employment periods,
  • (2) copy of birth certificate or certificate of Canadian citizenship or passport (if already in hand),
  • (3) period of availability (e.g., 20 June to 31 August 2012), and
  • (4)  duration of availability (i.e., 4 weeks, 7 weeks or no limit).
Note: Incomplete application packages (e.g. without course reports or PERs) will not be considered.  
14.  Selection will be announced as soon as training details are confirmed (anywhere from 1 April to 30 May 2012).
15.  Cadets taking part will receive the training allocation and, on successful completion, may be entitled to wear the Seamanship badge.

GENERAL
1. IAW ref, the 2012 International exchanges allocations are provided in attached document (2012 Sea Exchange Vacancies.pdf). Please note that exchange timelines may vary by plus or minus 2 weeks and are provided for planning purposes only. They will be confirmed under sepcor. Also, please be advised that cadet nominations received by RCSUs may be changed based on escort officer selections and exchange destination eligibility requirements.

CADETS SELECTION CRITERIA
2. Administrative and Training Prerequisites.
a. IOT be eligible to participate in the international exchanges, a cadet must meet or exceed the following prerequisites:

(1) have attained the age of 16 years as of the first day of the exchange but not 19 before returning home on completion;
(2) have successfully completed Phase IV from the Corps program;
(3) hold the rank of PO2;
(4) have completed any intermediate/TG 2 or 6-week specialty course;
(5) be strongly recommended by the Corps CO;
(6) be strongly recommended by the Area Cadet Officer (Sea);
(7) be strongly recommended by the RCSU Sea Staff Officer;
(8) be functional in English, which signifies a moderate understanding of the language and an adequate ability to express one’s self in English, specifically:

(a) he/she can understand the person talking to him/her most of the time,
(b) he/she can ask questions and express himself/herself with little hesitation, and
(c) he/she can be understood (verbally and in writing) even if the grammar used is not always perfect.

Note : para 2.a.(8). prerequisite may be waived for unilingual French speaking cadets for certain exchange destinations if a bilingual (French & English) speaking escort is selected for that exchange.
b. Exceptional cadets who have not had the opportunity to undergo summer training are eligible to participate in international exchanges if they meet or exceed the following prerequisites:

(1) have attained the age of 17 years as of the first day of the exchange but not 19 before returning home on completion;
(2) have successfully completed Phase IV from the Corps program;
(3) hold the rank of CPO2, on application;
(4) be strongly recommended by the Corps CO;
(5) be strongly recommended by the Area Cadet Officer (Sea);
(6) be strongly recommended by the RCSU Sea Staff Officer, and
(7) be functional in English, as defined at para 2.a.(8). above.

MEDICAL AND PHYSICAL PREREQUISITES – CADETS AND ESCORT OFFICERS

4. Exchanges may include rigorous training (e.g., long distance walking and hiking) and visit programmes conducted in extreme heat and humidity. It is important that applicants have a high level of physical fitness and be free of any condition and restriction:
a. which requires or may require treatment, incl the requirement for the use of an inhaler;
b. which precludes or may preclude them from taking part in exchange programme activities, training and visits; and
c. which precludes or may preclude them from following direction and taking part in exchange programme activities, training and visits.

5. IOT issue judicious recommendations on cadet applications, RCSU Sea Cadets Staff Officers are requested to inform their RMLOs of above conditions & prereqs.

WHAT WILL BE NEEDED BY CADETS

1) course reports/PERs for the 2 previous summer courses and staff cadet positions;
(2) copy of birth certificate or certificate of Canadian citizenship or passport (if already in hand), and
(3) two color pictures (passport or photomat/photo booth size).

335 RCSCC Calgary Poinsettia/Wreath Fundraiser

Blue Grass Nursery provides the community with a festive fundraising opportunity. 100% of the proceeds from this fundraiser will go to the London, England trip in the spring of 2013.

Blue Grass Nursery provides a selection of poinsettias (multiple sizes and colours), potted Christmas tree decorations, a Christmas sleigh centre piece, and wreaths. Attached is a product sheet and an order sheet Cadets must use to track orders. If additional order sheets are required please let A/SLt. Hunter know and arrangements will be made.

Cadets are responsible for collecting orders, collecting the money for the orders, and delivering the product to the customer.

Fundraiser timeline:

November 7: Cadets receive information and order package. Cadets will start taking orders and collect money for orders as they are placed.

November 21: All order sheets and monies are returned to A/SLt Hunter

December 9: Poinsettia/Wreaths delivered to NE Armoury. Cadets pick up orders and deliver to customers.

All orders must be paid for with cash.

The Cadet that has the highest amount of sales will be awarded a $25 gift card
