One of these initiatives is to support deployments of Royal Canadian Naval (RCN) ships to Canadian and United States ports in the Great Lakes throughout the 2012-2015 commemorative period. In 2012, the RCN has offered the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Organisation the opportunity to participate in these celebrations through the Great Lake Deployment (GLD) by offering a substantial number of billets.
> 2. The 2012 GLD will take place aboard HMCS VILLE DE QUÉBEC from 19 July to 10 October 2012. Overall coordination and funding of the GLD will be provided by D Cdts. In addition to providing Sea Cadets with a unique opportunity to participate in national and local initiatives to highlight this defining moment in our history, the aim of this deployment is to provide a modern and relevant ship-borne experience for cadets to hone their skills at the corps. DEPLOYMENT DETAILS
8. The GLD is an outstanding opportunity for Sea cadets. For this reason, only deserving cadets deemed capable of successfully completing the training are to be submitted for selection. It’s therefore important that:
a. cadets considering applying have a good understanding of the conditions and selection requirements;
b. RCSUs are aware that a bilingual CIC (Navy) escort officer will be onboard and responsible for cadets; and
c. comments from chain of command (Corps COs, ACOs, RCSU SOs and RMLOs) be based on above information.
9. Deployment conditions, medical support and selection prerequisites provided below should be used to gain a better understanding of the training and to assess an individual’s capability, suitability and eligibility.
a. Deployment Conditions. The ship will sail off the Canadian East coast down and through the Great Lakes for periods that will vary from 2 to 4 weeks and may be continuously at sea for up to 5 days. During this training, cadets are expected to be involved in every part of shipboard operations (operations room watches, upper deck operations, husbandry, cookery, engineering, damage control, safety, etc.) in a 24/7 watch system. Cadets may also be expected to participate in the ships tours while in port.
b. Medical Support. The ship can provide only basic first aid, simple urgent care needs (seasickness, minor lacerations, colds, etc.) and initial stabilization of emergencies in preparation for transport. There is no medication on board for treatment of chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, or heart failure.
